Building your iconic wardrobe and coming out of the closet!

One of my fashion goals for the year is overhauling my wardrobe and building an iconic wardrobe. I have an iconic personality (as does every fashionista) so my wardrobe should reflect this. I know what my style is. All I’m doing is adding key pieces to complete my look. Other people who are revamping their wardrobe may have to start from scratch!

Are you ready to come out of the closet?

1. find inspiration
Hopefully, by reading this blog you’d find inspiration. I cast a wide net for inspiration. Between copious amounts of other magazines, fashion shows, and “The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style” book, I found tons of ideas. Also think about books, film, and music that you love. Oftentimes, they provide a springboard for your fashion attitude. Start a favorites file! (Obviously, frumfashionista is my fashion favorites file!) Organize the things you ♥! It can be high-tech, analog, or a combination of both. Either way, choose the medium of organizing that you will look at most often and stick too! List your fav stores/websites, style icons, colors, music, makeup, etc. Pretty soon, you’ll see a pattern start to emerge.

2. Determine your style.
You don’t have to lock yourself into one style! Most people have a bit of eclecticism in their wardrobe. Mixing and matching is part of the fun! However, putting a name to your style really helps you pinpoint what reflects who you are. For example, a person who shops at Coldwater Creek would be a fish out of water in a Betsey Johnson boutique.

3. Consider your lifestyle.
And dress accordingly. Being honest about how you live is essential to building an iconic wardrobe. “Practical prettiness” is the phrase you should have in mind! Look at what doesn’t work in your current wardrobe.

4. Asses your closet.
Photograph every single clothing item in your wardrobe. This way, you can see what works and what doesn’t! Sort the pix into 3 categories: Treasure, Tzedakkah, Toss. The pictures help you become ruthless in pruning your clothes. Especially, if you haven’t worn something in over a year!

  • Treasure: if you really love something keep it!
  • Tzedakkah: if clothes are in good to excellent condition, donate it to a gemach. Believe me it’s new to them and you’ll be doing a mitzvah!
  • Toss: if the clothing is ripped and/or stained then toss it in the garbage.

5. Set a budget
Figure out how much you have to spend. (Factor in a buffer just in case.) Depending on whether you want to add a few new pieces or do a complete overhaul will largely determine your budget. Make a shopping list. Use my wardrobe basics list as a starting point!

6. Research, research, research Read this blog, check out magazines, books. Gather your fashion candy in a file, box, or online scrapbook.

7. Create your own Frum Fashionista!
Here are 10 iconic styles from The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: Don’t worry, I’ll take you through each one in later posts!

  • california casual

8. Set a schedule.
Fashionista always schedule when to get their clothes. I rarely impulse shop. Usually, when I do that it doesn’t work out.
