American Classic bonus post

The weather outside is frightful and (to some) not so delightful. It snowed a lot this morning. NYC hasn’t seen 1″ /hour accumulation in quite some time which was exciting! However, the rain came and washed most of it away. I figured this was a good time to talk about outerwear. Why not? This is the perfect time to snag a timeless coat for much, much less. Use the economic downturn to your advantage!

Like the other clothes I’ve talked about so far, clean and simple lines are the key here.

I found this knitted guitar strap pattern titled “Siouxsie” I said, OMG!

This is the ultimate in punk chic:

American Classic Essentials

Most of the stuff in this blog fall under American classic: the tweed and pencil skirts, the little black dresses, the slingbacks, are key elements to this style. American Classic

This look is very similar to Euro Chic. It’s pure urbane sophistication. American Classic is pure New York and the Hamptons! I dress in this style when I’m chilling for the weekend or running errands. This style is dummy-proof!

If you look at my Wardrobe Essentials list, you will see it’s a crib sheet for American Classic style. This is a great starting point for those who are not sure who they are stylistically yet: always appropriate and easy on the post-college budget! Classic, minimal, precise lines are the hallmarks of this iconic style. The best of American design is championed in this look. You can add as much edge as you want.

Y’all know who I am going to say epitomizes this style:

  • Jackie O
  • Lauren Bacall
  • Katherine Hepburn
  • Michelle Obama

You know when Michelle and her girls makes the J. Crew site crash, you know she’s the new face of American classic. When was the last time you heard the J. Crew site crashing?

Let’s start out by checking out the iconic piece of the American Classic look: denim jackets!

plus-size dark denim jacket
available in size 1X-3X, $31, Nakid Bird

classic topstitched plus-size dark denim jacket
cotton stretch, only in 2X, $56, C.J. Banks

classic dark-denim for (almost) everywoman
100% cotton, regular S – 2X $60, petite S-XL $60,
Tall (S – 2X) $65, Plus-size 1X-4X $65, Eddie Bauer

This iconic piece is just as versatile as it’s bottom counterpart. During winter, you can wear this as an extra layer over a dress with tall boots.

Springtime, it’s the perfect outfit to wear for drinks after work: a polo, white jeans skirt, and slingbacks.

For Summer, use it to toughen up a floaty, lightweight sundress or as a layer during cooler summer nights!

Obviously, Fall evokes that back-to-school cool mode: pair this with your new fall kicks!

Scratch and Sniff

O.K. so your computer doesn’t have smell-o-vision. It would be frighteningly interesting if your computer did! Somehow, I think I wouldn’t trust it. There’s nothing like going to the store and trying a perfume on so to speak!

I &hearts perfume. It all started when I was a little girl and saw my mother’s perfume bottles on her dresser. She had some of the classics: Chanel No. 5, Shalimar, Opium, as well as Avon scent such as Imari and Soft Musk. There’s some I find fascinating about a well designed perfume bottle/box. It gives you a hint of what the scent is. I have a cache of my favorite perfume bottles.

I must be the only person in the universe who doesn’t smell good with Chanel No. 5 on. By default, I am forced to be very picky about perfume because my Hubster is allergic to many perfumes. So my perfumes must pass both Hubster’s and my sniff tests!

I love Oriental Florals. Kenzo Flower and Sean John Unforgivable Woman are among my favorites! Especially Unforgivable Woman…it fits my complex personality to a tee! However, if you are sensitive to fragrances it may make you sneeze!

Check out Sephora’s Fragrance Finder and tell me what your favorites are and/or what you’d like to try out! Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, I want to try something new!
